Whence the willow tree

Whence the Willow Tree

a poem

Where oh where is the willow tree where Mother hung her Harp When they murdered our last priest

Child How can you sing his songs in the house of those who captured us Are you trying to torment me?

You sang them first to me Strange as that may seem When the fever came At the moment you thought I’d be lost to thee

Now how could it be that the songs of a lost nation of a God of retreat Be mighty to save The one you love above any

Why do those same sweet melodies Bring joy to the hearts of thy children Born to slavery

Our God is stronger Then you believe That’s what it all means

And so i shall go to find him Where the river Meets a willow tree
